MONTGOMERY-Governor Kay Ivey on Friday issued an amended Safer at Home Order to be applied Statewide during her joint press conference with State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. The order which includes an expanded list of items to reopen will be effective Monday, May 11, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. and will expire on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

“People are frustrated,” Governor Ivey said. “I understand. I care about you. We hear your voices, we know you’re frustrated, and today’s order will hopefully begin providing another round of hope for all of us.”

As a result of the update, several changes will go into effect Monday. Those include:

Non-work gatherings: Removing 10 person limit. Still required to maintain 6 feet of distance between person not from same household.

Restaurants, bars and breweries: May open with limited table seating, 6 feet between tables and subject to additional sanitation rules and guidelines.

Athletic facilities (such as fitness centers and commercial gyms): Athletic facilities may open subject to social-distancing and sanitation rules and guidelines. Specified athletic activities are still not allowed.

Close-contact service providers: Close-contact service providers (such as barber shops, hair salons, nail salons, tattoo services) may open subject to social-distancing and sanitation rules and guidelines.

Beaches: Open with no limit on gatherings. Must maintain 6 feet of separation.

Lifts the ban on group sizes of 10 or more. Effective May 11, all non-work related gatherings of any size that cannot maintain a six-foot distance between people from different households are prohibited. This covers church gatherings, though Ivey urged houses of worship consult the Alabama Department of Public Health’s “Guidelines for Places of Worship.”

As of Friday morning, May 8  there were 9,048 confirmed cases and 371 people have died from COVID-19 in Alabama. More than 117,000 people have been tested, but state health officials have said more testing is needed in order to safely reopen the state. 1,193 Alabamians are currently in hospital.
