Janet Marie Bruce, 49, of Madison, passed away on Sunday due to complications from pneumonia. Janet was born in Greer, South Carolina, but considered herself a Huntsville native since moving to the area at age two. She graduated from Grissom High School in 1987, and loved being a part of the Grissom Tiger Band. She attended Mississippi State University before graduating from the University of Montevallo in 1992 with a degree in social work.

Diagnosed as a teenager with a brain tumor, Janet beat cancer with her tenacious and vivacious spirit. In spite of resulting difficulties that affected her deeply for more than 30 years, those same qualities allowed her to continue to leave a mark on all she encountered. Janet fought hard with courage and grace through all of her days.

Janet loved spending time with her family and connecting with people of all walks of life. She always had a kind word to offer any stranger. Janet enjoyed playing and listening to music, Atlanta Braves baseball, snow-skiing, and games and puzzles of all kinds.

Janet was a lifelong active member of Weatherly Heights Baptist Church and loved her church family immensely. Janet had a generous spirit and loved to help and care for others in any way.

Janet is survived by her parents, Melvin and Rebecca Bruce; sisters, Sandra Bruce Bowlin and husband, Edwin, of Huntsville, and Erin Bruce Moncure and husband, Robinson, of Cary, NC. Janet was the loving aunt of two nieces and two nephews, Bethany E. Bowlin, Bruce A. Bowlin, Brooke E. Bowlin, and Caleb A. Moncure.

A memorial service will be held at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church on Monday, May 6, at 11:30 a.m. The family will greet friends at the church from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Weatherly Heights Baptist Church.
