ATHENS-Volunteers committed to supporting the fight against cancer will start their Saturday morning fishing for a cure.

By 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, volunteers with the City of Athens Relay for Life Team will be checking live wells, registering anglers and hoping for good weather. The team’s annual Relay for Life Bass Fishing Tournament will be at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur, starting at safelight and going to 3 p.m.

Team Captain Holly Hollman said anglers from Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri have already registered to compete.

“This is our largest team fundraiser, and we can make several thousand in the fight against cancer through this event,” Hollman said.

Anglers can register online at https://www.active.com/decatur-al/fishing/tournaments/8th-annual-city-of-athens-relay-for-life-bass-fishing-tournament-2019 or register the day of the tournament starting at 4:30 a.m. Anglers must have cash for on-site registration. Registration forms are also available to print from the city’s website at www.athensal.us.

Registration is $100 per team and $10 optional for the Big Fish Pot.

In addition:

  • The winning team will receive 2019 City of Athens Relay for Life Champ custom rods made and donated by Grassy Custom Rods and Tackle.
  • First through 10th place will receive cash prizes
  • Registered anglers will receive lunch provided by Athens Gas Dept.
  • Registered anglers will be eligible for a drawing for door prizes.
  • Each angler will receive a goody bag provided by Morell Engineering and HealthSource Chiropractic and bottled water provided by A to Z Office Resource.

According to the American Cancer Society, funds raised through Relay for Life support research, education, lodging and a 24-hour free hotline. For example:

  • $100 raised could help provide four personalized information kits to newly diagnosed cancer patients at a time when they need it most.
  • $200 raised could help cover the cost of eight free rides to treatment or a follow-up appointment.
  • $250 raised could help provide five nights of free lodging at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® when those fighting cancer have to travel away from home for treatment.

“As a breast cancer survivor, I know what support and advances in treatment mean when you hear the diagnosis ‘cancer’ and start your fight,” said City of Athens Relay Team member Kathy Cothren.
