TENNESSEE VALLEY-Significant rainfall is forecasted for the region over the next week. The central and eastern valley could see rainfall totals up to eight inches. To get ready for the rain, we are releasing high flows from the large tributary dams like Norris, Cherokee, Douglas, and Fontana to create as much storage as possible.
All nine dams on the main stem Tennessee River are operating at full turbine capacity and spilling excess water. We are working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to reduce flooding on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Boaters should stay clear of the dams because of fast, turbulent water. Kentucky Lake will likely rise above summer pool.
We are forecasting the river to rise above flood stage at Savannah, TN, and Florence, AL. 5-8 inches of rainfall could fall in The Shoals area by the end of the week. This rainfall comes on soil that is that is already soaked to capacity. According to NOAA The Shoals has received 13.24 inches of rainfall since December 1.
A 30-50 percent chance for rain is in the forecast for next week according to The National Weather Service.
