Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, Ala. — Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) nursing graduates ranks as one of the best nursing schools in Alabama according to the yearly NCLEX passage rates.

Licensed Practical Nursing Program (LPN) recently received a perfect passage rate on the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) with the Registered Nursing Program (RN) receiving 97%.

NW-SCC was one of only seven RN Schools in the State (43 total schools in the State had students attempt the exam) to attain at least a 97% passage rate with 64 of 66 graduates passing the exam. The College’s LPN program was one of only six LPN Schools in the State (25 total schools in the State had students attempt the exam) to attain a perfect 100% passage rate with 9 of 9 graduates passing the exam.

According to NW-SCC President, Dr. Humphrey Lee, this speaks very highly of the dedicated students and faculty we have at NW-SCC and the product we are putting into the workforce.

“We have some of the most dedicated employees and students at Northwest-Shoals and I believe this is a perfect example,” said Lee. “Both of our nursing programs do a phenomenal job of preparing our students to excel. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our nursing graduates given the stringent curriculum they endure.”

Within the Alabama Community College System, NW-SCC’s RN scores were second only to Faulkner State and the College’s LPN scores tied with five other schools with perfect scores.

The 2011-12 RN passage rate for the State of Alabama is 89.7% and the National passage rate is 90.2%. The 2011-12 LPN passage rate for the State of Alabama is 90.7% and the National passage rate is 84%.

Each board of nursing requires a candidate for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination, NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for practical nurses. NCLEX examinations are designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry-level.
