Billy Gene Moss, 76, of Phil Campbell, died August 22, 2018 at his home. He was the former Superintendent of Education of Franklin County Schools. He was also a teacher, coach, and athletic director of Northwest Junior College and a member of the First Baptist Church of Phil Campbell.

Billy Gene graduated from Deshler High School in 1960. His coaching career began at Section High School (1966-67), then Phil Campbell high School from 1967 through 1974 where he met his wife Nelda Wynn Moss. He later coached at Belgreen High School (1975-78) before going in the business world. He returned to teaching and coaching at Northwest Junior College in Phil Campbell in 1983 and retired there after being elected Franklin County Superintendent in 2000. He served Franklin County students for two terms.

Visitation with family and friends Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville. Funeral services Sunday, August 26th at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Sammy Taylor and Conley Bush. Pallbearers will be Dennis Conner, Mike Tice, Shane James, Tony Brewer, Joey Masterson and Duane Keener. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Billy Gene is survived by his wife, Nelda W. Moss; children, Joe Bart Moss and wife Amy, Wendy Rushing and husband Kyle, and Theresa Garrard and husband Jon; and niece and nephew, Vicki Looser and husband Chuck, and Steve Hunter and wife Fran. Six grandchildren also survive him, Hayden and Ragan Moss, Mallory and Lilly Rae Rushing and Jackson and Luke Garrard.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Sidney and Lorene Mitchell Moss; sister, Martha Christian.

Billy Gene’s life was dedicated to children and young people. And, of course, he loved and adored his grandchildren. Thus, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Franklin County Board of Education for Special Education needs.
