Christopher A. Sloan passed away June 15, 2018, while in Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama.

Chris was born on December 26, 1960 in Fremont, Ohio. He soon moved to Huntsville where he went to school and matured prior to entering the U.S. Navy in 1978.

Words that describe the man, Chris Sloan, would include giving, kind, patriotic, optimistic and even-tempered. Everyone who knew Chris would agree that he was one of the most unselfish men they ever met. Most of his active adult life was spent in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving his country. Of this he was very proud. He first enlisted in the Navy. Chris served on the USS Eisenhower, USS Nassau, and the USS Nimitz. He served with the Special Operations Service and was a part of the Southwest Asia and Joint Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Services. Chris also served in the Iraq Desert Storm war in 1991. During combat, he received many awards, including two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star. He also served as a Master Instructor for Aircraft Repair and Maintenance during peacetime. Instructing was his passion. It fit Chris’s personality of giving to others. After leaving the Navy, he joined the Army National Guard and was finally discharged as a Disabled Veteran in 2006.

In passing, Chris will always be remembered for his positive, happy personality, which was so obvious to everyone even though he had debilitating health issues. Chris had severe Multiple Sclerosis and ultimately lost both legs above the knee. He consistently focused on the care of others without any thought or complaints for himself. This endeared him to so many people whose spirits were uplifted by his very presence.

Chris was preceded in death by his wife, LaDonna K. Sloan; his father, Lamar Sloan; his sister, Kathy Dawn Sloan; his sister-in-law, Terri Sloan and his nephew, Shannon Sloan.

Chris is survived by his mother, Jaceena Shepard and stepdad, James Shepard; brother, Richard Sloan and wife, Deloris; stepsister, Karen Stephens and husband, Paul; niece, Brandy Sloan and husband, Steven Coffelt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at Berryhill Funeral Home, Huntsville, July 5, 2018 at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10:30.

The Guardians of Alabama will escort remains to the Armed Forces National Cemetery in Montevallo. The group is a charitable bike-riders group of which his brother Richard is an officer. In lieu of flowers, Chris’ family asks that any memorial contributions be sent to the Tut Fann Veterans Home Chris Sloan Activities Fund, 2701 Meridian Street, Huntsville, AL 35811 or to J. Shepard, 1571 Co. Rd. 414, Town Creek, AL 35672.
