Funeral service for Joyce Maples, 71, will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Sean Demar officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Somerville Church of God Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 10, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Peck Funeral Home.
Miss Maples died on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Decatur Morgan Hospital. She was born January 29, 1947, in Morgan County to Melvin and Alma Allen Maples.
Joyce graduated from Priceville High School, Florence State Teachers College and UAB. She was a retired elementary school teacher after spending 33 years students. She taught at Flint School for 23 years and West Decatur for 10 years. Joyce loved all of her students and their parents.
She was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan and a Bunco enthusiast. Friends and family knew never to interrupt an Alabama football game and she never missed a game.
She enjoyed traveling with her sister. They made it to all 50 U.S. States and have the rocks from each state to prove it. She loved decorating for Christmas and had travel trees with ornaments from all the places she and Janice traveled, though her favorite tree was of course, the Alabama football tree.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Roy Maples, a niece: Connie Maples, and a nephew: Larry Gargis.
Joyce was a member of 6th Avenue Church of God.
Survivors include: Twin Sister: Janice Maples, Three Brothers: Bobby Maples (Lillie), Charles Maples (Cheryl) and Ferrell Maples, Nephew: Rocky (Lillie), Nieces: Tonya and Kerra (Jim), grand nieces; Blakley, MaKenzie, Lexie and Braelinn.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Joyce’s longtime Bunco families: Betty Howell, Mary Lou Boyle, Kathryn Landers, Susan Emmons, Bonita Montgomery, Debbie Worber, Debbie Allen, Marcio Bridgeford, Arline Henderson, Sherrie Henderson, Carolyn Stanford, Olga Morris, Pam Bogle, Susan Harpe, Helen Hill, Van Hoskins, Doris Ridgeway, Joyce Terry, Judy Simms and Donna Beams.
