THE SHOALS-The annual Spirit of Freedom Celebration in the Shoals has been canceled due to lack of sponsorship support. Shoals Radio Group has sponsored the event for the past 35 years, but economic conditions have forced its parent company, URBan Radio Broadcasting, to drop the sponsorship this year, company officials said. The celebration annually attracts more than 30,000 people to McFarland Park and its surrounding area in Florence, which is along the banks of the Tennessee River. A variety of entertainment, arts and crafts and numerous other activities have made the event among the most popular in the state. The day-long event has been capped off each year by a fireworks celebration.
