Merle Twitty Englebert passed away peacefully at Floyd E. ‘Tut’ Fann Veteran’s Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Englebert. She was the last of four sisters and one brother.
Merle earned her bachelor’s in Education at Florence State Teacher’s College. She then joined the Marine Corp at age 20 in 1942, and was honorably discharged at the end of World War II. She got her master’s at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and taught school with her husband until she retired from Mountain Gap in South Huntsville in 1977. She was a devote Catholic and active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She was a member of lay Carmelite Order.
Merle loved writing, gardening, studying and classifying nature. She will be missed by her friends and family. She was known for her perpetual positive attitude and caring, generous nature. She was known for saying, ‘I couldn’t be better’, no matter what kind of shape she was in.
Survivors include her sons, Edward, Charles and Clear, and their spouses, Betty, Shelah and Steve; her one granddaughter, Yuri Craig; and great-grandchildren, Xie Beth and Wyeth.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22 at Maple Hill Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Family Services.
