ATHENS-Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association will host Wendell Fulks, Alabama State Game Warden, and Brian T. Owens, Senior Trooper Marine Police, on June 6th @ 5PM. The evening will be a “Community Engagement: Speaking Series,” as our speakers will share changes to the fishing and boating laws, permits and licensing.
Tourism Director Teresa Todd said, “Accidents are already happening. You may have read the May 31st, 2017 article in The News Courier of the Marine Patrol Troopers who investigated two boating deaths in Cleburne County after a man and his 3-year-old son died while using a kayak. We must be safer on the water.”
Todd continued to say, “This is how we hope to help bring awareness to our community on several topics, by having various speaking engagements. We want to help the public to be more aware and recognize these safety rules for themselves and for the safety of their loved ones.
- Remember to get your floatation devices and place them in your boat
- Be cognizant of the weather and the speed of flowing water
- Avoid distractions such as texting or talking on cell phones
- Do not operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol
These are commonsense guidelines for everyone to remember. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed with live “we forget to remember.”
Mark your calendars to join us on June 6th to learn about the new laws impacting fishing and boating and have a safe and enjoyable summer.
Speakers will begin at 5:00PM in the Athens-Limestone County Visitor Center meeting room. For more information call 256-232-5411.
