Memorial service for John Oliver King, age 76, of Decatur, will be Tuesday, March 21, 2017 11:30 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
Mr. King, who died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at his residence, was born August 9, 1940, in Georgia, to William King and Mable Ogletree King. He was an outstanding banjo picker and instructor who loved bluegrass music. A stranger was merely a friend he had not yet met, and he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone for any need.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Meredith) King of Decatur; two sons, John King Jr. (Rhoda) of Decatur, and Jamie King (Holly) of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Jana Hernandez (Pedro) of Tallahassee, FL; one stepson, Michael Copeland (Addie) of North Carolina; one stepdaughter, Jill Copeland of Hartselle; five grandchildren, Gracie and Sarah King of Atlanta, Keith Hernandez of Tallahassee, Alex Copeland of North Carolina, and Haley Copeland of Hartselle; and several nieces and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745, Decatur, AL 35602.
