Norma Davis Moak, 85, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Known as Billie by her close friends and family, she was born in Rome, Georgia on November 30, 1931. She is the middle of three daughters born to Harry Watters Davis and Norma Pierce Dekle. She graduated from Girls High School in Rome, Ga. then left for Atlanta, Ga. where she studied and trained at Piedmont Hospital to become an X-Ray and Lab Technician. Upon graduating she returned to Rome and worked first at Battey General, and then at Floyd County Regional Hospital.
In 1956 she married Rodney Lynn Moak and became an Army wife for the next year. In 1958 she and her husband and Rod Jr. moved to Huntsville, Alabama. With a young son she worked only occasionally until another son, Michael Wray, came on the scene. Then she elected to become a fulltime mom and homemaker and her family agrees that it was one of the best decisions made in their married lives.
Over the years she was involved in numerous clubs and civic organizations. She and Rod started attending the First Baptist Church soon after their arrival and had been members since 1960. She was a member of the Woman’s Club, the Historic Huntsville Foundation, the Huntsville Land Trust, an Investment Club, and the Buttercup Garden Club. She was a faithful volunteer for many years at Harrison Brothers and at the Land Trust.
Billie loved flowers and always wanted bird feeders in the yard. Although she grew up in a “girl’s world”, she learned to love the outdoors and spent many days, and nights, in the woods camping and even backpacking on the A.T. with her three “boys”. She loved to travel and with her husband made numerous independent trips to Europe, and enjoyed poking around in the less traveled places. She had many close friends and was always a devoted wife and mother, a fun partner, and a wonderful friend.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, an older sister, Betty Anne Flournoy, a younger sister, Martha Susan Shamblin, and a son, Michael Wray.
Survivors include husband, Rod; son, Rodney Lynn Moak Jr. of Foley, AL; grandchildren, Tyler (Leah) of Huntsville, Taryn (Will) of Lacey’s Spring, AL, and Cayton “Caty” (James) of Huntsville; great-grandchildren, Conner, Dane, West, and Parker; brother-in- law, Harold E. Shamblin of Atlanta; niece, Susan Shamblin Lanigan (Greg) who have two sons Andrew and Alex, who live in Ft. Meyers, FL; and nephew, Luis Lea Flournoy of Atlanta.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, February 26 at First Baptist Church Chapel. The funeral will follow in the chapel with Dr. Travis Collins and the Rev. Mark Seanor officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
