Historic Walking Tours Kick Off Saturday In Athens And Mooresville

7293027_staATHENS-The wait is over, this Saturday marks the first of five Saturdays in April to explore the history, heritage and architecture of Athens and Mooresville during the April Saturday Historic Walks.

These free walking tours are part of a statewide initiative by Alabama Department of Tourism to encourage visitors, newcomers and long-time residents to explore the treasure of communities throughout the state.

Athens will be offering multiple simultaneous tours to choose from eachSaturday in April – the state’s only venue to do so.  Points of interest for the tours include Beaty Historic District, Houston Memorial Library and Historic District, Athens City Cemetery historic graves and Downtown Historic District.

For anyone interested in being part of the walks in Athens, they should be at the Athens-Limestone Visitors Center 100 North Beaty Street in Athens at9:45AM for tour selection and be prepared to depart with the knowledgeable guides by 10:00AM.  unnamed (1)

7293029_staMooresville will be offering tours of Alabama’s oldest city at the same time.  Anyone interested should meet at the Mooresville Post Office at9:45AM at 24495 Lauderdale Street in Mooresville.  Homes and buildings as well as the history of this tiny 1-square mile community will be amid the beauty gardens and towering shade trees.

Tours will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.  Comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing are suggested as the tours will pass over a variety of surfaces and require long distances of walking.
