Bill Gober, of Sheffield, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at the age 87. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 26, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Sheffield. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Chad Holder and Robert Shirley officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield, with full military honors provided by the American Legion.
Bill was born in Franklin County, Alabama, but lived in Sheffield most of his life. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Marine Corp. Bill always said he would never complain about being too hot because he was one of the “Chosin Few” who survived the -40 degree temperatures at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He had the opportunity to return to Korea in 2012 for the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War sponsored by the South Korean Government. Bill was the co-owner of Bill and Bob’s Barber Shop in Sheffield for 58 years and retired from Sheffield Utilities in 1994. He was a member of the American Legion Post 31 Color Guard, Masonic Lodge 503, UFCW Local 1659, VFW 4919, Korean War Veteran’s Association, and the 1st Marine Division Association. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist church of Sheffield.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Gober: parents, Miles O. and Bea Gober; brothers, Giley, Orville, Charles, and Tommy Gober; and sisters, Neat Massey and Effie Massey. Survivors include his son, Bill Allen Gober and wife Cindy; grandchildren, Kristin Gober Maginnis and husband Adam, and Greta Gober Ely and husband Derek; and great-grandchildren, Darby and Cooper Maginnis, and Pierce Ely.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Richard Deal and Dr. Jerry Williams. Also, to Keller Hospice staff Ann Massey, Meg Pickle, Diane Williams, and Grace Gunn. Also, to the Home Instead sitters Lisa Ford, Tonya Garrie, and Pam Peden. A special thanks to Don Johnson, Walter Bennett, and Bill Baker for help with the Color Guard attire and the other members of the Color Guard in helping conduct the military funeral.
