prison reformMONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday will hold a news conference in Montgomery to announce the introduction of the Alabama Prison Transformation Initiative Act.

The legislation, sponsored by State Representative Steve Clouse (R-Ozark) and State Senator Trip Pittman (R-Montrose), will allow the construction of four new prison facilities to reduce overcrowding, improve safety conditions for corrections officers, allow for additional inmate re-entry programs and improve operational practices and procedures for the Alabama Department of Corrections. Governor Bentley announced his plan during his 2016 State of the State Address. Construction could begin as early as Fall of 2017 and should be completed within three years. House Speaker Mike Hubbard, Pro Tem Del Marsh, Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn and bill sponsors will join the Governor for the news conference.

The news conference will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Old House Chamber at the Alabama State Capitol.
