MONTGOMERY – Four communities in northwest Alabama will make water and sewer improvements thanks to grants totaling $622,143 announced by Gov. Robert Bentley.
The grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission will help fund improvements in Double Springs, Hamilton, Lynn and Red Bay.
The following grants were awarded:
Winston County
A $200,000 grant to the town of Double Springs will help improve the efficiency and reduce operating costs of the town’s wastewater treatment system. The project includes installing 800 feet of sewer line and modifying 10 pump stations to replace electric pumps, reroute flows and install backup pumps. The town’s Water and Sewer Board will supply manpower to complete the electrical work at the stations.
The town of Lynn will use a $23,360 grant to install a pump station near the intersection of Alabama Highway 13 and County Road 1. The pump will improve water pressure for 18 households and a church in the area. Local funds of $5,840 will supplement the award.
Marion County
A $198,783 grant will enable the city of Hamilton to improve water service to 84 housing units administered by the Hamilton Housing Authority. The project will include repairing or replacing more than 16,000 feet of corroded, leaking water lines and related equipment and installing hydrants to increase fire protection. Local funds of $85,193 will supplement the award.
Franklin County
The city of Red Bay will use a $200,000 grant to install more than 4,500 feet of sewer lines to alleviate overflows at two manholes located along 4th Street. Local funds of $198,000 will supplement the award.
