ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson has released a statement concerning the auto accident that occurred on Highway 72 Tuesday, October 13 involving an 18 wheeler and a pickup truck:
“This afternoon at approximately 4:00 Officer Jimmy Rogers located an accident that had just occurred on US 72 East West of Line Road. The accident involved a white Chevrolet pick up truck and an 18 wheeler. Officer Rogers called for help and attempted to assist a male that was trapped inside the pickup truck.. Athens Fire Rescue arrived and was able to cut the vehicle from around the male. The male in the pickup truck died on the scene of the accident. The driver of the 18 wheeler was not injured. 

Our investigation is continuing into this accident, however this is what we know at this point. Witnesses told investigators the 18 wheeler was traveling west and stopped on US 72 to make a right turn into a business. The pick up was also traveling west and struck the back right side of the trailer part of the 18 wheeler. The driver of the pickup that died in the accident was David L. Priputen. MR. Priputen was 64 years old. Mr. Priputen lived on Yarbrough road here in Athens.
Traffic in the area was down to one lane till about 6:30 this evening. Our agency was assisted by Athens Fire Rescue, Athens Limestone Ambulance Service the Limestone county Coroner’s office. “
