Eloise Davis – Obituary

EloiseDavisEloise Davis passed away on March 6, 2015 with her youngest daughter Doris by her side. Eloise was 95 years young being born May 21, 1919 in Mt. Hope, Alabama.

Eloise was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Palmer Davis, Sr.; her son, Roy Davis, Jr., her daughter Sylvia Sue Davis Tompkins; her parents Annie Gargis Landers and Elijia B. Landers, son in law Jerry C. Cummings. She was the sole survivor of eight siblings Frank, Leonard, Cecil and Ross Landers; Altus Patterson, Pearl Graves, and Lucille Evers. She is survived by her only surviving child, Doris Davis Cummings of Tuscumbia and Texas and Doris’ longtime companion, Ed Kyser of Texas. Granddaughter Susan Pigford Lamie, three great granddaughters Amanda Armstrong, Charlene Ayers and Casey Lamie, four great great grandchildren. numerous nephews and nieces. Son in law, Douglas Tompkins of Orlando, Fl.

She was educated in the Sheffield Public Schools and Mrs. McGavock’s Business School in Tuscumbia. Her first and only job was working for the Federal Government at the ASCS office in Tuscumbia for 23 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia, Alabama where in the 50’s she taught the six year old boys in Sunday School. When her ASCS office was located in the Colbert County Courthouse, she saw several members of her former Sunday School class working as attorney’s. Mother had a long full life. She loved to travel and went to many places in the U.S. and overseas. Mother’s happiest memories were summers at her Grandmother Sally Stanford Gargis’s home in Leighton.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Colbert Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday, 3/7.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, 3/8 at the Davis/Huff Cemetery located on Underwood Mountain Road with Pastor A. G. Stepp of the Bear Creek Baptist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests any donations go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Hospice of the Shoals, Florence, Alabama.

There will be no visitation at the Cummings’ home at 510 Allen Lane.

Colbert Memorial is assisting the family.
