Lesley Burgess “Boots” Mashburn, age 93, of Decatur, died December 27, 2014, at his residence with family and friends at his side. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, December 29th, at Shelton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 30th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Burningtree Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Mashburn was born June 15, 1921, in DeKalb County to the late Thomas Noah Mashburn and Lucy Jane White. He worked as a plumber and pipe fitter and was a long time member of Decatur Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran, and Purple Heart recipient. Pvt. Mashburn participated and was wounded in the Normandy Campaign of 1944. Mr. Mashburn received many medals for his service while in the Army, including, Normandy Campaign Battle Star, American Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon.
Mr. Mashburn was a member of the American Legion and participated in conducting military funerals as an Honor Guard for 37 years. He was named Alabama Disabled Veteran of the Year in 2011.
He is survived by sons, Jerry L. Mashburn, of Geraldine, Tommy Mashburn (Sue), of Somerville, Danny Mashburn, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and daughters, Judy Hall (Mickey), of Springville, Ala. and Jan Williams, of Decatur; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Loudell “Jo” Mashburn.
Pallbearers will be Greg Mashburn, Jeff Mashburn, Lesley Mashburn, Brad Parker, Adam Mashburn, John Salmon, Joe Willard, and Larry Abercrombie.
