Richard C. C. Carter
(August 9, 1929 – December 4, 2014)
Richard went to his heavenly home on Thursday, December 4, 2014. Born August 9, 1929 in Huntsville, Alabama to Richard (Scotty) C. Carter, Sr. and Stella Dangler Carter. He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1947, attended The University of Alabama, and Alabama Law School, in Tuscaloosa, graduating in 1955. Admitted to the Alabama and Florida Bars in 1955.
Mr. Carter practiced law in downtown Miami and South Miami from September 1955 until his retirement in 2001, when he returned to his hometown of Huntsville. He always considered Alabama as “home” and was an ardent fan and supporter of all Alabama universities because of their availability and higher educational opportunities for himself and others of limited finances.
Following his graduation from high school, he received a congressional appointment by Congressman Bob Jones to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, but after much agonizing chose to pursue a law career. He also took pride in his application to admission to practice before the United States Supreme Court, being personally sponsored by the late former Alabama United States Senator John J. Sparkman.
He served as a commissioned officer in the USAF and was appointed as a special agent for the O.S.I. Department of the Air Force during the Korean War. His last assignment was Special Agent in charge of the Miami, Florida detachment of O.S.I. at Miami International Airport.
He was active in various Bar associations including American, Alabama, Florida, Dade County and their various law sections and committees. He further participated in numerous community business and service organizations in South Florida, including President and Lt. Governor of Kiwanis International, Commodore, University Yacht Club, The University Club, Bankers Club, Elks Club, Director of the downtown bank of Miami, Commercial Bank of Kendall, and the First Union National Bank for Dade and Monroe Counties in Florida, and member of Kiwanis Club and Elks Club in Huntsville.
He enjoyed participation in athletics including tennis, golf and extensive sailing in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, including Bermuda, The Virgin Islands and The Bahamas. He also served as coach of young people in the baseball and softball programs.
Survivors include his loving wife of 24 years, Janice; sister, Ann Branum (John) of Guntersville, Alabama; children: Richard C. Carter III (Marlen) of Greenville, Texas; Wesley D. Carter (Renee) of Blowing Rock, North Carolina; Suzanne Carpenter (Noel) of Milton, Georgia; and Leah Clo (David) of Brentwood, Tennessee; eleven grandchildren; two twin great-grandsons; stepson, Daniel Calvo; and several cousins. Mr. Carter left a multitude of friends and former clients resulting from his many years of private practice, which included his satisfactions of personal legal and counseling service to others during their hours of need. While in Florida, he often humorously referred to himself as the last “country lawyer in Miami” and was pleased that no complaint was ever made or filed against him with either the Florida or Alabama Bar Associations. He attended Southside Baptist Church of Huntsville.
