Carol Atkinson Newton of Huntsville passed away Saturday. Mrs. Newton was born to Clifford and Helena Griggs Atkinson in Spencer, Iowa. The family moved to Sioux City where Carol attended school and Morningside College for two years. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Library Science, and married John A. Newton, Jr. in Sioux City on October 16, 1937.
The Newton family moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1942 from Omaha where Mrs. Newton was the Librarian in the Joslyn Art Museum. Mrs. Newton was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She held leadership positions in the Des Moines County Historical Society, Iowa State Historical Society, serving on the Board of Trustees and as President, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and founder of the Heritage Trust for Preservation and Restoration. She also served the YWCA and the American Red Cross to establish and instruct a swimming therapy class for handicapped children. Mrs. Newton, upon the death of her husband, Jack, moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 2005. She worshipped at First Presbyterian and enjoyed 10 years in the south.
Survivors include children, Nancy Ann Gorzelanski of Omaha, Nebraska, John A. Newton (Kay) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Robert E. Newton of Topeka, Kansas; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church Gideon Blackburn House. A memorial service will immediately follow at the church.
