James W. Lyell, 92, of Nitrate City, left this life on March 2, 2014. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6-9 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be Wednesday, 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Ricky Lyell and Marty Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
James was born in Hohenwald, TN on September 7, 1921 to William E. Lyell and Emma Voorhies Lyell. He touched the lives of many people with his sweet spirit and funny humor. He was quite a character, full of life, who’s favorite past time was to joke and read his bible. He strongly believed in God, Family, Love and Alabama football. James served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He was married to his beloved wife, Stella Lee Baker Lyell for sixty five years and they had four children; Peggy Word, Susan Blasingame, Rickey Lyell and Nathan Lyell. James loved his family so much and took pride in working to support them.
He retired as a construction carpenter and became the door greeter at Wal-Mart for twenty one years. He loved this job and met many great people. He was known for wearing his “Hee-Haw” overhauls, crazy costumes and riding his tricycle. James was a Christian who lived and served the Lord. He preached the gospel for many years before residing as a member at River Road Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, one brother and five sisters.
He is survived by his sister, Louise Williams of Hohenwald, TN, four children; Peggy Word (Barry), Susan Blasingame (Ben), Rickey Lyell (Elaine), Nathan Lyell (Debra), fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Pallbearers are, Brent Word, Jeremy Lyell, Eric Mullins, Zach Lyell, Josh Robertson, Trey Robertson, Johnny Cobb, Tad Drake, Josh Brooks, Brad King and Dexter Coffee.
We appreciate all the family, friends and caregivers. A very special thanks to Peggy and Barry Word, Ben and Susan Blasingame, Rickey and Elaine Lyell, Shalako King, Bonnie Drake, Jeremy Lyell, Jenny Brooks, Liz Webb and all the special people at Alacare for taking such great care of our father, grandfather and great grandfather.
