FLORENCE – Mounted police are police officers who patrol on horseback, they continue to serve in both remote and metropolitan areas. They are employed for the use of crowd control because of their mobile mass and height advantage. In large crowds it allows citizens to see the officers, which in turn deters crime and if someone is in need allows them to find officers. The Florence Police Department plan on employing a part time Mounted Patrol in February.
Here is what Florence PD had to say:
“The Florence Police Department is proud to highlight the Mounted Patrol Unit during the month of February. Your Mounted Unit is a part-time unit of four horse/rider teams. This unit trains annually with the Mobile Police Department’s Full Time Mounted Unit in the areas of crowd control, criminal apprehension, and community relations. Additionally, officers in this unit are responsible for the care and upkeep of the animals. The Mounted Unit provides assistance during special events throughout the city.”
