James Robert Tinkle, 49, of Rogersville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at ECM Hospital in Florence after an eight year battle with cancer.
He recently retired from Joe Wheeler State Park after serving 16 1/2 years as Golf Course Superintendent. Originally from Memphis, his passion for
golf course management started in high school and followed with a degree in Turf Management from Mississippi State University.
Using his turf management skills he gave of his time and knowledge to improve the sports fields of the Rogersville Community.
James was very active at Rogersville United Methodist Church and was very involved with the Youth Band Ministry and Choir. Music was an integral part of his entire life. He wrote music, sang, and played guitar; James was happy just sitting and “picking” with a few of his friends. Several years ago he was able to fulfill his dream of recording a CD. “Clueless… A Good Try” was recorded in Nashville at Buzz Cason’s Studio.
During nine years of fostering children through Lauderdale County DHR, James and Liz had approximately 30 children stay in their house for weeks at a time,
resulting in the adoption of their son, Steven Tinkle.
His motto, “Always Try to Do What You Can” was evident in his caring spirit, his “never give up” attitude, always greeting you with a smile and, most importantly, his respect for everyone he met.
The memorial service will be Saturday, December 14, at 2 p.m. at Rogersville United Methodist Church on Lee Street with Chuck Worley officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Liz; son, Steven; stepson, Richard Hallman; stepdaughter, Donna Hallman; granddaughter, Anna Grace; father, JW Tinkle; four siblings, Lee Tinkle (Liz), Pam Hertenstein (Kris), Pat Grubbs, and Kelly Berry (Rick); and two nephews; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by mother, Nila A. Tinkle; maternal grandfather, Robert H. Taylor; maternal grandmother, Nancy Jane Taylor; paternal grandmother, Bertha Tinkle; and paternal grandfather, Hardy Tinkle.
We would like to send our special thanks to Dr. Webb and Hospice of the Shoals, Dr. Kalliath and his special nurses, the staff at Joe Wheeler State Park and the special tournament group, Serenity Scramble.
