In Loving Memory of Fran Latham GatchSeptember 13, 1953 – November 2, 2026
Fran Latham Gatch passed away on November 2, 2026. Born on September 13, 1953, Fran grew up in Jasper, Alabama, where her family, community, and early experiences helped shape a life devoted to education, faith, service, and the arts.
Fran graduated from Walker High School, where she was named Miss Walker County and went on to compete in the Miss Alabama pageant. She continued her education at Samford University, where she was a member of the A Cappella Choir, and later earned a graduate degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Fran began her professional career as an elementary school teacher in the Jasper City Schools. Her love of education and desire to make a difference in the lives of others remained central to her life and work.
A woman of deep faith, Fran was a member of Northside Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Jasper. Following her graduate studies, she pursued her calling to ministry, serving congregations and communities as a clergy member. She served on the staff of Canterbury United Methodist Church and later at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Her ministry also included service at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. Through her work in ministry, Fran shared her faith, offered spiritual guidance, and touched the lives of many.
Beyond her work in education and ministry, Fran was deeply involved in the cultural and civic life of her community. She served as president of the Friends of the Alabama Ballet and was a member of Samford University’s Legacy League. Her involvement reflected her appreciation for the arts, education, and the importance of giving back to the institutions and communities she valued.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Latham, and other beloved family members.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Gatch; their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Gatch; and her brother, Phil Latham.
Fran’s life was marked by many meaningful chapters and accomplishments. From her beginnings in Jasper and her years at Samford University to her dedication to teaching, her calling to ministry, and her leadership in support of the arts and higher education, she made a lasting contribution to the lives and institutions she touched.
Her legacy lives on in the students she taught, the congregations she served, the organizations she supported, and the family she loved. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories, meaningful relationships, and a legacy of faith and service that will continue through all those whose lives she influenced.
Fran’s favorite Bible verse was John 16:33:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.”
These words reflect the faith and hope that were central to Fran’s life. May the promise of Christ’s peace bring comfort to all who loved her.
