Celebrating the Life of Deborah “Debbie” Kay Johnson Gerelds
Deborah “Debbie” Kay Johnson Gerelds, 80, was a vibrant, joyful, and passionate woman whose love for Jesus, family, and life left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Born in Schenectady, New York, and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Debbie lived life with a little extra sparkle, a whole lot of heart, and an unmistakable spirit. She was spunky, always laughing, and truly the life of the party. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome and loved.
Debbie loved Jesus deeply and was never shy about sharing her faith with others. Her faith guided the way she lived and loved, and her greatest blessings were her family. She was an amazing mom and Mimi who loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren fiercely.
A natural caretaker, Debbie devoted much of her life to nursing and helping others. Her compassion and generosity extended far beyond her profession. She had a special gift for recognizing when someone needed help and bringing joy wherever she went.
She also knew how to enjoy life! Debbie loved traveling, cheering on her Auburn Tigers, listening to good music, and making memories with family and friends. Her infectious laughter, big personality, and joyful spirit made every gathering a little brighter.
Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Juanita Hollingsworth and Albert Johnson, and her husband, Tandy Gerelds, the love of her life.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Jessica Gerelds Norwood (Stacy), Todd Gerelds (Jennifer), and Jill Gerelds Christopher (William).
Her adored grandchildren:Ben Norwood (Alexandra), Molly Norwood McWhite (Keith), Tucker Norwood (Madison), Jake Norwood (Katy), Morgan Gerelds Burhus (Christian), Bailey Kay Gerelds Young (Everett), Allison Gerelds Suazo (Matt), Maggie Leigh Gerelds, Mary Creed Christopher, Libby Christopher Harwell (Tanner), Sara Tandy Christopher, Jane Christopher. And ten great-grandchildren.
If Debbie taught us anything, it was to love big, laugh often, help others whenever you can, and never miss an opportunity to enjoy life. The world was a little brighter with Debbie in it, and her light will continue to shine through all those who loved her.
Celebration of Debbie’s Life
Family and friends are invited to visitation on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, 825 North Main Street, Tuscumbia, Alabama. A private family graveside service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you keep Debbie’s bright spirit alive by performing a random act of kindness for someone in need. There is no better way to celebrate her life than by sharing the love and kindness she so freely gave to others.
