Funeral service for Helen June (Legg) NeSmith, age 85, of Moulton, will be 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Parkway Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. R. C. Borden officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Midway Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. NeSmith, who died Friday, September 4, 2026, at NHC Moulton, was born October 13, 1940, in Alabama to Milford Lafayette Legg and Grace Eddy Legg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight NeSmith; parents; four brothers, William Howard Legg (Mae Sue), Hoover Legg (Helen), Hoyt Legg, and Tom Legg (Willine); and two sisters, Louise Glenn (Walter) and Betty Garrison (Thirty).
Helen June NeSmith faithfully served the Lawrence County community for over 60 years owning and managing NeSmith’s Hamburgers — one of the oldest and most successful restaurants in the State of Alabama.
Helen was a Christian woman who knew who she was and what she wanted. She was honest, hard-working, determined, and a little bit stubborn. Those who truly knew Helen would say she was a fervently dedicated wife, mother, sister, friend, and boss.
Aside from being a historical female business owner in the City of Moulton, Helen was known for her thoughtfulness, benevolence, and the impact that she made on the community. Helen loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and reveled in them. Helen also cared for members of the community silently by feeding the hungry, caring for the less fortunate, and filling gaps for those in need in a multitude of ways. Even without public recognition, Helen often saw what needed to be done and did it.
Helen lived life her way, and that never wavered. Whether it was her business-work, how she cared for her family, or the way she approached her life — she was unapologetically herself. Even though Helen leaves behind six decades of hard work, faith, generosity, and love for her family, her impact will be felt throughout the community for generations to come.
She is survived by her son, Mark NeSmith (Nancy); daughter, Beth Turner (Jeff); sister-in-law, Betty Legg; four grandchildren, Katie Beth Wilkerson (Cody), Ellanor Wilson, Kimberly Pollard, and Catherine NeSmith; and five great-grandchildren, Tillie Wilkerson, Keller Wilkerson, Felix Pollard, Mariah Pollard, and Dexton Stone.
Pallbearers will be Steve Legg, Jeff Legg, Ronald Legg, Mike Legg, Kenny Garrison, Cody Wilkerson, and Greg Alexander.
