ATHENS — The Limestone County Veterans Service Office, in partnership with the
Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, will launch Operation We Remember, a month-long
initiative dedicated to remembering veterans lost to suicide and reminding veterans throughout
our community that help, resources, and support are available.
The initiative will begin with a brief remembrance ceremony on Thursday, September 3, at
10 a.m. on the lawn of the Limestone County Courthouse in downtown Athens. The
community is invited to attend and join local leaders, veterans, families, and supporters in
honoring the lives of veterans lost to suicide.
Throughout the month of September, Operation We Remember will honor the 150 Alabama
veterans who died by suicide between October 2024 and October 2025. More than
remembering those who have been lost, the initiative is intended to reach veterans in Limestone
County and surrounding communities who may be struggling or unsure where to turn.
The Limestone County Veterans Service Office hopes the campaign will remind veterans that
they have a local resource ready to help connect them with services, provide information, or
simply listen.
September 3 Remembrance Ceremony
The brief ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the Limestone County Courthouse lawn and will
include:
Opening prayer
Remarks from the Mayor of Athens
Remarks from the Chairman of the Limestone County Commission
A time of remembrance for veterans lost to suicide
Closing prayer
Operation We Remember will continue throughout September, bringing awareness to
veteran suicide while sharing the important message that no veteran should have to struggle
without support.
