FLORENCE – North Alabama Medical Center (NAMC) has been named among U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals edition as a High-Performing hospital for Colon Cancer Surgery. This is the highest distinction a hospital can earn as part of the publication’s Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings.
Fewer than half of the thousands of hospitals evaluated earned a ‘High Performing’ designation in the types of care evaluated. U.S. News’ annual Procedures & Conditions ratings are designed to assist patients and their healthcare providers in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.
“We are honored to be recognized among the highest-performing hospitals for Colon Cancer Surgery,” said Mike Howard, CEO and Market President of North Alabama Medical Center. “National recognition such as this is made possible by the caliber of the medical staff, nurses, clinical teams, and colleagues who lead in delivering best-in-class care that is always patient-centered.”

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 14 adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions; only one third of them earned an award in any of those 37 areas of care. To determine the Best Hospitals, U.S. News analyzed each hospital’s performance based on objective measures such as risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals Specialty rankings and Procedures & Conditions ratings methodologies measure patient outcomes using data from more than 800 million records of patient care.
NAMC adds this honor to its growing list of recent awards and accolades. After receiving a U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals nod last year for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) treatment, the hospital received national recognition with a five-star rating for Outpatient Back and Neck Surgery from Healthgrades. Becker’s Hospital Review has also recognized NAMC for its top-tier safety as one of just nine hospitals in Alabama to achieve a zero central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rate. The hospital has also recently received reaccreditations as a Chest Pain Center from the American College of Cardiology, as well as the Get With The Guidelines®– Stroke Silver Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll.
