Keren Gibb Hilliard, 83, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born to Robert Tuttle and Louise Jewell, Keren was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard Hilliard; her parents; and her sister, Barbara Finch.
Keren devoted her life to dance, the arts, and the young people she inspired. As Associate Director of Community Ballet and later the founder and owner of Alabama Youth Ballet, she touched the lives of hundreds of dancers and their families. An accomplished dancer, choreographer, teacher, mentor, and artistic leader, she helped shape Huntsville’s performing arts community for decades. Her productions, including The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Snow White, and countless others, became treasured traditions for generations of families. Her vision also helped establish the longstanding partnership between the ballet and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, and the organization she built continues today through Rocket City Ballet.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Keren was a gifted artist, talented seamstress, exceptional cook, avid traveler, and lifelong lover of cats and birds. She possessed remarkable creativity, practical wisdom, and an infectious laugh that drew people to her. Whether sharing a meal, solving a problem, creating something beautiful, or simply enjoying time with family, she made those around her feel loved.
To her grandchildren, she was never simply “Grandmother.” She was “Nonnie,” a name lovingly given to her by her first grandson that became a cherished title for the entire family. She was present for birthdays, graduations, performances, holidays, and life’s everyday moments, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Her encouragement fostered a love of theater, music, dance, and the arts that continues through her family today.
Keren is survived by her daughters, Wendy Graham (Jay) and Michelle Thomas (Christopher); her beloved grandchildren, Corey Graham (Patience), Tyler Graham (Shannon), and Frank McCoy; and many extended family members, former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Her legacy lives on not only in the countless dancers she taught and productions she created, but in the kindness, creativity, generosity, and joy she shared so freely. More than anything, Keren will be remembered for the way she made others believe in themselves and for the love she poured into her family, her students, and her community. She leaves behind a community forever shaped by her passion and a family forever grateful for her unwavering love.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 11, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 3:00 p.m., at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, 2320 Bob Wallace Avenue SW, Huntsville, AL 35805.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Keren’s memory.
