Evelyn Mathews Pierson passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. She was 98 years old. Her funeral service will be Saturday, August 8 at 10:30am at First United Methodist Church of Gadsden. The family will accept friends in the church parlor from 10:00am until the time of the service at the church. Pastors Sherri Reynolds and Ken Casey will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery. Collier Butler Funeral Home will be in charge.
She was born in Montgomery on July 24, 1928, and was a resident of Gadsden and Rainbow City since 1955. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia and graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was a member of Gadsden First United Methodist Church having served on the Board of Stewards, Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Worship Committee. She was a past president of the United Methodist Women and Circle Charman many times and a member of the Martin Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Gadsden Garden Club, Gadsden Needlepoint Guild, sustaining member and past president of the Gadsden Service Guild. She loved playing bridge, needlepoint and making baby quilts for unwed teenage mothers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenwood M. Pierson, Jr.; her son, Glenwood M. Pierson, III; her parents, Genie Blue and Joseph Mathews; her sisters, Genie Blue Palmer and Mary Ellen Bryan.
She is survived by her daughter Fran Pierson Lyons (Randy), five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Lyons, Fred Palmer, Jeff Dyar, Joe Bryan, Jud Bryan and Bill Bryan.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Gadsden First United Methodist Church or John Croyle’s Big Oak Ranch or a charity of your choice.
