Susan Lynn Heibler Chase

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Lynn Heibler Chase, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend.  She was born to George “Pete” Heibler, Jr. and Joyce (Whitehurst) Heibler at Porter Hospital, Middlebury, VT February, 19th, 1964 and died in Huntsville, Alabama July 15th, 2026 age 62 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Susan grew up in Whitehall and Fort Ann, New York and was a graduate of Union Springs Academy in Union Springs, NY. where she met her future husband, Mark Chase.

Susan and Mark were married January 9th, 1983 in Whitehall, NY.

Susan later obtained a degree in Elementary Education from Castleton State College.

Throughout her life, Susan dedicated herself to serving others with compassion, faith, and unwavering commitment. Her greatest joy was her family, and she initially devoted herself to being a loving wife and mother. As her family grew, so did her calling to serve her community. She worked for a number of years as a teacher and principal and later directed her energies to the town of Beaverton, Alabama, serving as mayor, firefighter, and EMT.

Susan touched the lives of everyone she met with her generous and determined spirit, compassionate heart, and many talents. She had a special love for quilting and spent many hours creating beautiful quilts that she gifted to family, friends, hospitalized children, victims of house fires, and others in need. Her acts of kindness reflected the deep Christian faith that guided her life.

Susan had a gift for organizing special events, planning meals and arranging details for memorable family gatherings, weddings, and reunions.

Susan leaves behind her husband, Mark Chase who has been at her side during her final hospitalization; her children, Andre Chase, Ben (Paige) Chase, Melissa (Landon) Hill, and CJ Chase; and her five grandchildren with a sixth expected in September. She is also survived by her mother, Joyce Whitehurst; sisters Sharon Ann Brown [Bert] and Devota Burris; brothers Douglas Heibler [Beth] and Richard Heibler [Becky] along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her greatly.

Susan was preceded in death by her father, George “Pete” Heibler, and her two older sons, David Chase, age 9, and Jason Chase, age 5, who perished in a house fire in 1993.

Susan has requested cremation. Her ashes will be interred at a later date in Benson Village Cemetery, Benson, VT alongside her maternal grandparents, Julius and Evelyn Whitehurst and her sons, David and Jason.

Susan’s life was beautifully reflected in the Scripture, Matthew 25:40: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'”

Susan’s legacy of generosity and caregiving will continue in the lives of all who loved her.
