Janis Collins Janis Collins, age 84, of Holly Pond, passed away on Sunday June 28, at the DeKalb Regional Medical Center-Senior Unit. She was born March 3, 1942, in Pinson, Alabama to James Edward Phillips and Wilma Pauline Phillips. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald “Don” Collins; brother, Teddy Phillips; and sisters, Joyce Blackmon and Paula Sando. Survivors include her sister, Pat (Johnny) Baker; brothers, Jim (Corene) Phillips, Charles Phillips, and Donald Phillips and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
From a young age, her siblings affectionately referred to her as the “bossy” one. What they recognized early on as a strong personality became one of Janis’s greatest strengths. Her natural leadership and determination helped her build a successful career in finance that spanned more than 40 years, with most of that time spent serving in management. Along the way, she earned the respect of her colleagues and formed many lifelong friendships.
Although Janis never had children of her own, she was a mother figure to many throughout her large family and was deeply loved by each of them. She had an extraordinary gift for knowing when someone needed encouragement, support, or a helping hand, and she was always there without hesitation. Her kindness and generosity reached far beyond her family, touching the lives of countless others.
After graduating from high school, Janis moved north to help a family member. It was there that she met her husband, Don. Later, Janis and Don made their home along the banks of the Mulberry River, a place that brought her immense joy and pride. Their home became the heart of countless family gatherings, where laughter was shared, traditions were celebrated, and treasured memories were created that will be cherished for generations.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Neighborhood Assisted Living for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care they provided to our beloved Janis. Their support and dedication brought comfort not only to Janis but also to all who loved her.
A memorial service for Janis will be held at a later date.
