John Houston Works, 69, passed away on June 26, 2026, at NMMC-Tupelo, MS. John had a diverse career, working in law enforcement in New Mexico and Texas, managing restaurants such as Shoney’s and What-a-burger, and finally driving a truck until his retirement. He was a devoted husband to Retta for 31 years and a loving Papa to his grandchildren and great grandchild.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Retta Bailey Works, his brother Randy Works and wife Michelle, his sisters Melissia Pettigrew and Tammy Terry, his children Brian Atkins and wife Jessica, Brandy Rorie, and Brent Atkins. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jayce Hester and wife Channa, Keely Rorie, Libby Rorie, Ayla Rorie, and Paxton Rorie, as well as his great grandchild, Luca Hester.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Works and Lola Huskey, and a grandchild, Bailey Rorie.
No public services will be held per his request.
