Ed Cox Profile Photo Lewis Edward Cox, 77, also know as “Big Ed” passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. Born on September 3, 1948, to L. J. Cox and Nina Kay Knight. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, Lewis was a proud graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1966. During his school years, he earned a special place in local history as a member of Smithville High School’s first football team under the leadership of Coach Thomas Carroll.

Ed lived life with enthusiasm and a servant’s heart. He was a devoted Harley-Davidson rider and enthusiast who enjoyed the open road and the friendships formed along the way. He was also an accomplished pitmaster whose passion for barbecue earned him numerous awards in Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) competitions.

Community service was at the center of Lewis’s life. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department, where he dedicated countless hours to serving and protecting his community. His generosity extended far beyond the fire department, as he faithfully volunteered each December for many years at Eldridge Children’s Home, bringing joy and support to children during the Christmas season.

Ed was also a die-hard fan of Mississippi State Bulldogs, proudly cheering on the Bulldogs through every season. Whether gathered around a football game, tending a smoker, riding his Harley, or serving others, Ed embraced every moment and made a lasting impact on those around him.
