TUSCUMBIA, Ala. … Summer time is camp time, and youngsters attending Art Camp at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia, this year will learn about watercolors, pastels, clay items from around the world and 3-D sculptures made with found objects.
“We are so excited about the local artists who will be leading our art-camp classes this year,” said museum director of education Stephanie Qualls. “The students are going to be inspired and will learn so much.”
Camp for ages 6-10 is Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19. Camp for ages 11-15 is Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 26.

explore water-media painting and sculpting using the museum’s Martin Petroglpyh, a 3,000-pound boulder that people who lived in northwest Alabama 800 to 2,000 years ago carved with footprints and snakes, as inspiration; noon through 12:45 p.m., lunch; 12:45-2:45 p.m., Assemblage Sculpture, taught by Tina Nesbitt, using found objects to create 3-D designs in the style of artists such as John Petrey; 2:45-3 p.m., snack; and 3-5 p.m., Clay, taught by Amita Bhakta, who will guide students in making ornaments and other items in the style of various worldwide cultures.
Registration deadline is Monday, July 2.
The schedule for July 23-26 is 10 a.m. through noon, Water Media, with Shepard; noon through 12:45 p.m., lunch; 12:45-2:45 p.m., Pastels, with Martha Carpenter, who will teach realistic portraiture using sepia-tone pastels in the style of the Old Masters; 2:45-3 p.m., snack; and 3-5 p.m., Clay, with Bhakta.
Registration deadline is Monday, July 9.
Students in each class will learn about art history and art techniques and will create three-four original works to take home at the end of camp. Campers should bring their own lunches and snacks if they’ll be attending during those times and should dress for getting messy, Qualls said.
Finished pieces will be on display at 5 p.m. the final day of each camp, she added.
Students may attend one, two or all three classes. Class and registration fees vary.
