ATHENS-There are several events planned in Athens for August the end of August and September, including several 5Ks. Here is a list of some of those events:
Aug. 26 at 4 p.m., Athens-Limestone Public Library
$20 adult, $15 child
Fundraiser for the library. Dress us as your favorite book character or dress patriotic, which is the theme this year. Games, food, music and more. Go online at http://alcplfoundation.org/
Learn to Read Council 30thanniversary
Aug. 30 from noon to 4 p.m., Revival Building
Free ice cream from Kreme Delite to celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary.
Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m.
Kick off Superhero Week with Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation. The Limestone County Courthouse will turn gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness, and the run will start at 6:30 p.m. Participants will walk or run for 46 minutes in honor of the 46 kids diagnosed each day. Wear your favorite superhero shirts or costumes and let your capes fly. Anyone can walk to raise awareness for free, or kids can register for $5 and get a medal while supplies last, or teams may register for $1 per team member to enter to win a Super Team Spirit trophy (minimum $10 to be a registered team). Pre-register and check out the details at www.elisblockparty.org. There will be Kona Ice, popcorn and music at the rally.
Sept. 2 at 8 a.m. at the Alabama Veterans Museum
All veterans are invited to the museum for breakfast and a time of fellowship with fellow veterans.
Sept. 8 from 5-8 p.m. in Downtown Athens
This is the last Fridays After Five on the season. This is hosted by Athens Main Street to encourage merchants and shoppers to “stay later” in Downtown Athens. High Cotton Arts will have “Marvel”ous Friday and highlight its Comic Book Art Exhibit and Contest held in conjunction with Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation. A superhero will make an appearance for pictures. There will be activities for children and more.
9/11 Heroes Run for the Travis Manion Foundation
Sept. 9 starts at 7 a.m. at the Alabama Veterans Museum
The 9/11 Heroes Run unites communities internationally with the goal to never forget the sacrifices of the heroes of Sept. 11 and in the wars since. Join Athens Fire and Rescue and compete as a team or an individual. On Facebook: 9/11 Heroes Run-Athens, Alabama

Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Big Spring Memorial Park
Hosted by Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation. See superheroes, emergency response/military/farm vehicles, vendors, comic book art, activities and more. Dress as your favorite superhero and help support our community’s youngest heroes, those battling childhood cancer.

Sept. 16 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
A fundraiser for Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful. This mildly challenging race will take runners through historic Athens neighborhoods and through the Courthouse Square. Prizes will be awarded, including cash prizes. T-shirts guaranteed to the first 200 registered runners. Runners and walkers are welcome.

Annual AL/TN Trail of Tears Ride
Sept. 16 with an estimated time of arrival between 1-2 p.m.
Watch the riders come through Athens on U.S. 72 on their way to Waterloo. Athens Police will restrict access to U.S. 72 through Athens while riders are present.
Forever Fighting Meningitis 5K
Sept. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon
Fundraiser for Limestone Area Community Foundation Scholarship and Meningitis Awareness Fund. Registration is $30. Jessica Elkins was a 15-year-old cheerleader at Athens High School when she suddenly contracted bacterial meningitis and died a few days later. Since then, Jessica’s family has raised money and awareness for meningitis prevention. Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Downtown Athens
Hosted by Athens Main Street as a celebration of all things fried and the Greek origin on the city’s name. Events include opening ceremonies with Athena-Grease Goddess, frozen turkey toss, music, Dub’s Burger Eating Contest and more.
