evelynMrs. Evelyn Hunt Sanders Haugen, 82, of Newnan, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015, at her home. She was born May 4, 1933, in Decatur, Alabama to the late Walter Drane Sanders and Clara Berry Hunt Sanders.
Evelyn grew up in Newnan, Georgia and was a 1951 graduate of Newnan High School. She attended college first at Sweetbriar College and graduated from University of Georgia where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. She was elected valedictorian of the University of Georgia class of 1955. After college, Evelyn lived in Washington DC where she worked in the State Department. While in Washington, she met Willis G. Haugen, who was then serving in the Navy at the Pentagon. The two would marry in 1956 and remained devoted to each other until Will’s death in November, 2014. Will Haugen was her best friend.
Evelyn was a homemaker until her boys grew up. She then worked for years as a travel agent at Newnan Travel. She was one of the founders of The Heritage School. She was a member of the Newnan Reading Circle and a lifelong member of the Newnan Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. She served as president of the Women of the Church and was an honorary lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church.
The funeral is Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 3 p.m. at the Newnan Presbyterian Church, followed by a burial at Oak Hill cemetery with Dr. Harry Barrow and Dr. George Haugen officiating. The visitation will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street in Newnan. Rather than flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of your preference.

Survivors include her sons, Walter S. Haugen, of Newnan, Willis George (Jeanne Naylor) Haugen Jr., of Columbus, Georgia; grandchildren, Victoria Russ Haugen, Charis Hunt Haugen, Clara Berry Haugen, Michaela Claire Haugen, Willis George Haugen III, and Edith Harris Haugen; and sisters Letitia (Donn) Downing, of Novato, California and Melissa (Boyce) Thomas of Newnan.
