MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $70,000 grant to help the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force continue its fight against illegal drug use and trafficking.

Task force agents conduct undercover operations to arrest and prosecute drug offenders, find and dismantle dangerous methamphetamine laboratories and assist with drug-related violent crime investigations.

“Illegal drugs are a threat to our families and communities,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to support the efforts of the task force to combat the use and sale of these harmful substances in Lauderdale County.”

The unit includes members of the District Attorney’s Office, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office and the Florence Police Department. It conducts operations within Lauderdale County and works with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies on joint investigations in north Alabama.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.

Bentley informed  the Mayor  of Florence that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $23,333 will supplement the grant.
