ATHENS-Athens Arts League is offering the community back-to-back free concerts for July’s Art After Hours event.
The concerts will be Thursday, July 11, from 6-8 p.m., and Friday, July 12, from 7-9 p.m.
Thursday’s performance will feature Huntsville-based Temple of Blood with the original drummer from Nile, Pete Hammoura. Temple of Blood’s music genre is Christian thrash/power/speed progressive metal. Band bassist and backup vocalist Garth Lovvorn Jr., wanted to offer the free community concert in conjunction with Athens Arts League. Lovvorn is a new member to the League’s board.
“It is refreshing when an ensemble comprised of die-hard fans of the music that they love form a band,” the group’s Facebook page states. “This is exactly what Temple of Blood did. Temple of Blood was formed in 2001 with the mission to record, perform, and share their love of the music that inspired them with fellow Metal fans from around the world.”
The concert will be on Washington Street in front of High Cotton Arts, weather permitting. Spectators can bring chairs to enjoy an evening of heavy metal music in Downtown Athens.
On Friday, the League will host the regularly scheduled Art After Hours event, sponsored in part by Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and the City of Athens. Madison-based Good2Go will perform classic rock, blues and soulful and funky R&B.
“The members of Good2Go are individually and collectively experienced in live and studio musical performance, and know how to get a crowd energized,” the band’s Facebook page states.
Friday’s performance will be on Washington Street in front of High Cotton Arts, weather permitting, and spectators can bring chairs for that outdoor concert as well.
The event will include a Summer Days Celebration theme with kids’ stations featuring art projects, Athens ROCKS painting area, hula-hoops, sidewalk chalk and other activities. The artists at High Cotton Arts will have locally made art for sale and information about art classes.
The League will provide light refreshments, and the Little Kitchen Food Truck will set up and sell Cajun and other type dishes.
“Athens Arts League’s wants to support local musicians and artists and provide these cultural events for our community,” said Athens Arts League President Jennifer Hilton Sampieri. “We appreciate Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, the City and all of our donors and patrons for supporting our efforts to expand art experiences in Athens and Limestone County.”
