Phil Campbell, Ala. — Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will present the Christmas Magic-Lantern Show to the public Friday, November 30, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lou B. Bevill Fine Arts Center on the Phil Campbell Campus.

According to NW-SCC President Humphrey Lee, the College will not be able to offer Toyland this year. “Unfortunately, Mr. Lanny McAlister had to make the difficult decision to retire his wonderful musical “The Legend of Toyland,” said Lee. “After 30 successful years and thousands of patrons, we are extremely grateful for Toyland and the tremendous memories it has given so many.”

NW-SCC will continue its 30 year tradition of presenting a community Christmas Show, this year with something new and different, with the Christmas Magic-Lantern Show.

The show will travel back in time with the boisterous fun of America’s only Victorian magic-lantern show. An authentic 1890s visual extravaganza projected on a full-sized screen (the kind of show that led to the movies).  Christmas stories like Scrooge, the Little Match Girl, and The Night Before Christmas; animated comedy; and songs dramatized on screen by a live showman and singer/pianist. The audience can participate in the fun, creating sound effects, and joining in chants and sing-along carols.

For 16 years, The American Magic-Lantern Theater has delighted audiences fromLincoln Center to Singapore. “Remarkable . . . You’ll be enthralled,” says The Family Adventure Guide to Connecticut.  But National Public Radio says it best: “It’s an incredible experience… Don’t miss them. They’re a living national treasure!”

The American Magic-Lantern Theater is the Nation’s only touring Theater Company recreating Victorian magic-lantern shows, and one of only three in the world. It is dedicated to helping modern audiences understand and enjoy Victorian literature and art by recreating this lost theatrical tradition.
