ATHENS-Athens and Limestone County students will learn about event planning and stage setup for this weekend’s The Secret Sisters Concert.

Athens Arts League is presenting the Grammy-nominated Shoals-based duo in concert on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at Athens State University’s McCandless Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Sponsors are funding up to five high school students to work with those planning and setting up for the concert so the students can get hands-on experience and attend the concert. Concert tickets are $50 each. In addition, a college student who is interning with Athens Arts League will photograph set up and the concert.

“Athens Arts League not only wants to bring cultural events like The Secret Sisters concert to our community, but we also want students to gain experience in music-related fields by working in conjunction with us on these events,” said Athens Arts League Board Vice President Diane Lehr.

In November, Grammy-nominated Athens native Anderson East performed a benefit concert for Athens Arts League, and city and county high school students worked with organizers to set up the stage, run sound check and photograph the event.

“Two of our East Limestone students worked most of the day for the Anderson East concert and then thanks to sponsors, attended the concert at no cost,” said East Limestone High School Band Director Jennifer Janzen. “They were thrilled to get that experience so they could see firsthand what goes into putting on a concert.”

Current and past members of the Limestone County Legislative Delegation are helping sponsor Athens Arts League’s Alabama Music Series, which kicks off with The Secret Sisters. The series will include concerts at either McCandless Hall or outdoors at Scout Music House, and the monthly Art After Hours events with local and area bands at High Cotton Arts.

To stay updated on concerts and Art After Hours, follow Athens Arts League on Facebook or on its website at www.athensartleague.com.

Tickets are available for The Secret Sisters concert on Eventbrite or by emailing athensartsleague@gmail.com. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Athens Arts League’s mission to support artists, provide art education and bring cultural events to Athens and Limestone County.
