Dorothy Brooks Burkhalter – Obituary

Dorothy Brooks Burkhalter, 73, resident of the Kossuth Community and native Tippah Countian, passed away Saturday morning May 12, 2018 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Southaven following an extended illness.
Funeral Services cherishing the life of Mrs. Burkhalter will be at 2 PM Wednesday May 16 in The Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home with Bro. Terry Ray Vuncannon officiating assisted by Bro. Tommy Young. Burial will follow in the Peoples Cemetery near Ripley.
Born April 22, 1945 in Tippah County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine Conner Brooks. She received her education in the Rienzi Public School System and was employed as a case worker for the Tippah County Department of Human Services for a number of years.
Affectionately known as “Maw Maw Dorothy” and “Nana” to her grandchildren, Mrs. Burkhalter was a member of Peoples Baptist Church and a homemaker throughout her life. A true Southern Lady, she took pride in her appearance, enjoyed flowers, fishing and pitching washers. Cooking, baking and preparing food for others were favorite pastimes.
Visitation for Mrs. Burkhalter will continue today until service time at The Ripley Funeral Home.
Those left to treasure her memory include her children Sherry Hall (Garry) and Benny Bates (Peggy) both of Ripley, two sisters, Debbie Fulk of Corinth and Vickie McSorley (Jeff) of Rienzi, a brother, Billy Brooks of Rienzi, six grandchildren, Emily Finley, Benny Allen Bates, Abby Grace Hall, Johnny Steen, Heather Jackson and Hannah Hayes , four great grandchildren, Noah, Kinley, Keaton and Milo and a special brother in law, Wayne Burkhalter.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Bates and Johnny Burkhalter and a brother, Wayne Brooks.
