ATHENS- Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson issued a statement regarding a murder that took place on Tuesday night, July 25:

“Last night shortly before 10:00 the police department received a call that a person had been shot at 712 Horton Street. Officers responded along with Athens Limestone Ambulance Service. When officers arrived they located Brenton C Gatlin 27 years old inside the residence, he had been shot one time. He was transported to Athens Limestone Hospital where he later passed away. Our investigators have worked thru the night interviewing individuals that were inside the residence when the shooting occurred. At the present time were looking for several people to interview about this case and we do have a person of interest were looking for. We do ask if anyone has any information about this case they contact the Athens Police Department at 256-233-8700. I don’t have a current address for Mr. Gatlin at this time.

This investigation is currently ongoing and I can’t make any other statements without possibly compromising the investigation. I will update you when we have more information tomorrow as information becomes available. Due to the late hour and all of our investigators and admin staff being out all night I wouldn’t expect any updates till after noon tomorrow.”
