ms trojan wrestlingMUSCLES SHOALS-The Muscle Shoals Wrestling team traveled to the Mortimer Jordan HS Invitational this weekend where several wrestlers made the podium at the last regular season event . At 113lb, Arick Shankles took home gold with a :27 pinfall over Brady Rhinhard of Walter Welborn HS. Shankles ended the tournament with 4-0 with three pinfalls. The 120lb weight class saw Brennen Shankles place third with 1:19 pinfall over Berres from JO Johnson. B Shankles was 3-1 on the weekend with a loss in overtime to Smith of Gardendale. Joseph Green was runner up at the 126lb weight class pitted against ranked opponent Braxton Worthington of MJ. Green was 2-1 for the tourney with two pinfalls. Greyson Beaver (134lb) was in one of the most exciting weight classes of the weekend featuring multiple state ranked wrestlers. Beaver went 3-2 on the weekend for a fourth place tournament finish. James Green secured a third place finish at 154lb with a 6-4 decision over Thomas Cooley of Benjamin Russell HS. Green had a 4-1 record with two pinfalls on the weekend. At 160lbs, Braden Barnes had a 3-2 record on the weekend coming back through the consolations round after an exciting one point match in the quarterfinals with former state champion Noah Howse of Hayden.
The Trojans will try to qualify for the state tournament at the AHSAA SuperSectional tournament on February 6/7 at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Trojans have four returning state qualifiers with two time state placer Joseph Green and three time state champion Arick Shankles. Both Beaver and B. Shankles were former state qualifiers.
