ATHENS – Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning and the Livingston Concert Lecture Series will be presenting Audacious Alabama Women; Petticoats, Politics, and Prisons presented by The Seasoned Players. The program will be held on August 19 at 11:30 a.m. in the Ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center. Two performances comprise the event that will be offered with an optional lunch provided.
My Name is Julia– a one woman show about Julia Tutwiler was written by Kathryn Tucker Windham and will be performed by Carole Armistead. This one woman show presents Julia as she looks back over her life’s work. It is part of a project of Audacious Alabama Women: Politics, Petticoats, and Prisons. This project is presented through a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state affiliate of the National Humanities Foundation. 
Sunbonnets to Suffrage: The Alabama Woman, Her First 100 Years – was written in 1991 by Betty Pewitt and Jean Pierce especially for The Seasoned Performers. The script highlights the women who shaped Alabama in her earliest years of statehood, 1819-1919. The opportunity to explore the origins of the audacity of these remarkable Alabama women with the Alabama Humanities Scholar is a gift.
The Seasoned Performers is a theatre group that is one of the largest and longest running senior theatres in the country and the only senior adult theatre in Alabama. The group has served 145,000 audience members–with 29 original play productions, 35 original reader scripts, performances in 23 Alabama counties and in four other states.
Dr. Tina Naremore Jones, Dean of Educational Outreach at the University of West Alabama will lead a discussion after the program. Cost to attend the event is $15 which includes lunch. There is no charge to attend the play only. Reservations may be made by calling the Center for Lifelong Learning at 256-233-8260.
