ATHENS FEATUREDATHENS-So far minor injuries being reported in Athens proper. Still getting info on power outages.  Jackson Drive, West Market Street and Elm Street have trees and power lines down. Some homes reported damaged on Jackson Drive and Lucas Ferry Road.   Roberts Apartments on Ninth Avenue have confirmed damage according to sources from authorities in Athens. Several roads  are blocked and Public Works trying to clear them for emergency vehicles. Authorities are asking sightseers to stay off roads.  Athens closed to all public traffic.

Sheriff Mike Blakely has confirmed that there are 2 fatalities west of Athens at Billy Bob Trailer Park on U.S. 72 in Coxey community.  First responders are still trying to get into some of the damaged areas.

Athens  have 11,900 without power, according to Mayor Ronnie Marks, and the number is climbing. There are  over 100 poles down and 86 of them are on U.S. 72.

Traffic lights are out sporadically in city. City police do not have manpower to direct traffic at all of these areas. Slow down and treat these as 4-way stop. If it is not an emergency, you need to stay home.
