ZIP CITY – The folks in this Northern Lauderdale County community are NOT slaves to conformity. So, they had a rodeo yesterday… They had a rodeo clown… Had kids… Hot dogs… Wagon rides… Even had a post hole digging contest.
But no horses.
One of the rodeo organizers, Robert Walker, who has P&K Western Wear, told this reporter, “Anybody can pull off a rodeo with horses. But it takes real talent to do one without ’em.”
We were kind of skeptical, driving up to Zip City. Figured that nobody would show for a rodeo with no horses. Boy… Were we wrong! When we arrived, first thing we noticed was the aroma of hotdogs and hamburgers cooking (and nothing else). Didn’t have to watch where we walked. It was kinda refreshing. Then we heard the music. Robert Walker was up on the stage, guitar in hand. Enough said. But the music was great. There were lots of kids running around. Folks were lined up at the dunk tank to take out a volunteer fireman or two.
Something else we noticed… Seemed that everybody… from the babies to the old folks… were smiling. It was a great day.
The Quad-Cities Daily was on hand to record the day in EVENT PHOTOS. We present them here. Enjoy!
