Wyman Butch Atchley, 71, of Grant, passed away Friday.
Butch was born in Old Guntersville Hospital on July 8, 1952. During his life, he lived in numerous places throughout the United States, including Click Hollow, AL; Mount Shade, AL; Grant, AL; Montgomery, AL; Nashville, TN; and even as far as Wichita Falls, TX; Tuscon, AZ, Williamsburg, VA as well as Charleston, SC. He ultimately ended up back in Grant, AL, where he lived for the remainder of his years.
Throughout his life, he held many different occupations. He originally started at Peoples State Bank before joining the Air Force. He then worked for the Federal Government in the Defense Combat Audit Agency until he retired at the age of 50, thinking that he would be able to play lots of golf and spend time with his family and granddaughter. Unfortunately, 9/11 happened, and he returned to his calling within the military as a Dispersing Officer for the South East, based out of Charleston, SC. He ultimately served in Charleston for another 6 1/2 years before officially retiring and returning to his hometown of Grant, AL. After moving back, his family said he declared himself the “unofficial mayor of Bucksnort,” as this was the name of his community.
He was preceded in death by father, James Fred Atchley; mother, Nina Reather Jones Atchley; and brother, Charles Henry Atchley.
Surviving are wife of 49 years 11 months, Carolyn Farmer Atchley; daughter, Melany Candice Angell; son, Joshua Adam Atchley (wife Britni Bunnell Atchley); granddaughters, Victoria Elizabeth Angell and Emelia Sutton Atchley; grandsons, Edison Dale Atchley and Oliver Wade Atchley; sister Martha Atchley Cooper; and brother James Raymond Atchley.
Visitation will be Tuesday 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Grant Church of Christ. Services will be held at Grant Church of Christ, Wednesday at 10:00 AM with Bro. Scott McLaughlin & Bro. Harold Kelly officiating.
Interment will be in Free Home Cemetery.
